Visual Literacy Lesson Plan:
Step 1: Literal observation Brainstorming discussion of the picture above. Teacher to write students' ideas on chart paper, overhead or interactive whiteboard. Ask the following prompting questions:
Step 2: Interpretation/Task Brainstorm questions that the students may have of the artifact. What is a symbol? What could this mask symbolize? Explain that wolves symbolize cooperation because they travel in a pack and work together to survive. Students will need to cooperate to complete today's task. Go over the rubric for collaboration, as seen to the right. Ask students to predict whether their cooperation skills will be at a level 1, 2 or 3. Record students predictions on the second page. Divide students into groups of 3 and provide each group with a piece of chart paper. Explain the task: Students will work together to draw the wolf mask. Around the mask, students will include words or pictures that describe what cooperation looks like. Step 3: Evaluation/Application Groups will present their work to their classmates, including their description of what cooperation looks like. Students will self-asses their own cooperative skills during this task and compare it to their predictions. Refer back to this assessment tool throughout the year during collaborative tasks, always reminding the class to work as a 'wolf pack.' |
