First Peoples have their own culture and language.
When children were taken away from their family and sent to residential schools, many had forgotten some of this culture.
Lesson/Activities:
Show students the cover picture of the book "Not My Girl" written by Christy Jordan-Fenton.
Before reading the text, ask students to make inferences. Ask them to look at the characters - who do you think they are? What do you think is happening in this picture? Does the older lady look happy or sad? Do you have any idea why she might be sad?
While reading the text, ask prompting questions - How would you feel in Margaret's shoes?
After reading the text, have students write a journal entry from Margaret's perspective. Ask them to consider how she felt after returning home?
